Ms. Small and Ms. Heimer's Blog 22/23

  Lots of students worked on this throughout the morning. A river flowing into the ocean.  With mountains that turned into volcanoes. Animals, people, boats and pools including a buoy to stay safe were placed in the ocean.  A towel shop and roller coaster are positioned next to the beach. We read, "Waynetta and the Cornstalk"? How was it the same or different to Jack and the beanstalk?  Was the story  fiction or non fiction? What new materials were in the classroom?

  We read "One bean" by Anne Rockwell.  A great segway to the number one and growing beans.    Señor Geffin read a book in Spanish called "Pintura de raton."  What colors did the mice jump in to?  What colors did they create? What colors did you use to paint your clay self portrait? When we plant our beans what will we need?

Starting this week we will take a  closer look at numbers.   Today we did a little lesson and read "zero is the leaves on the tree" by Betsy Franco I asked the class What does zero mean? Abby: Zero is when you're born and you're not one yet." Ellery: "I have zero ipads!" Austin: "zero is stretchier than "O". Margot: "(letter) "O" is like a zero, it looks like zero." Ellery: "Zero is an oval." The book gave us examples of what zero was. Can you think of another one? What recipe did Daisy share with us from her Family Project?

  We read "If kids ran the world" by Leo and Diane Dillon After reading the book I asked the class How they would run the world? Margot:"Not throw trash in the ocean.   Abby: "I would protect animals." Roshni:" Help the Earth by planting big trees." Evelyn: "Plant flowers." Lily:"Help the Earth. Planting flowers for the bees." Wes:"Build!  A house for lots of people." Corin: "I would not kill bugs.  I don't like to kill the bugs." Layla:"They're change makers." Daisy:"I like spiders because they kill mosquitoes." Ellery: "I like bugs." Sounds as though the Earth is good hands. What fruits did we learn in Spanish? What game did you play in P.E.? What was the name of the new Teacher that joined our class today?

  We read a book called "Friendship." How can you be a good friend? What memory did you share from last week? What did you do in Music with Ms. Hansell?

 Hi everyone I thought I would share a few highlights from my professional development trip to Reggio Emilia and the Loris Malaguzzi center.
